Math Support for Language Learners

February 6 @ 9:00 am CST - 3:30 pm CST

Students studying math on the sidewalk

This 1-day workshop provides math educators with an opportunity to learn about and implement ways to support students who are language learners. Research-based pedagogical practices in math education encourage teachers to use a student-centered approach. This involves facilitating math discussions and requiring students to provide explanations and justification for their solution strategies. In order for students to access these skills, they need to be able to use academic language through reading, writing, speaking and listening. These skills can be challenging for English Language Learners. In this workshop, participants will engage in example activities that demonstrate ways to build in scaffolds and other language supports for participating in math discussions, using reasoning and providing justification.
