Instructional Coaching in the Content Areas

Our student-centered coaching courses take a practice-oriented approach to the work of coaching that applies broadly across content areas. This course, Instructional Coaching in the Content Areas, will spur participants to zoom in on particular content areas for deeper exploration around standards and learning progressions, the alignment and design of formative assessments, and the analysis of student evidence in order to make instructional decisions. Participants will consider how these practices relate specifically to current expectations of K-12 literacy and mathematics instruction. As participants examine what instructional coaching looks like in literacy and mathematics classrooms, they will engage in collaborative discourse within online Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), considering the implications of adult learning theory while also contemplating how to build the literacy and math identities of students in schools. Participants will collaborate to extend this learning as they further develop content-specific resources for use in their professional contexts.

This content-specific course can be taken on its own or as part of the Student-Centered Instructional Coaching Certificate Program. Participants who complete the four courses in the Student-Centered Coaching Certificate Program in addition to this Instructional Coaching in the Content Areas course will receive a coaching certificate with this distinction.
