Mary Hayes

Mary Eilleen Hayes is in her fifth year teaching four-year-old kindergarten (4K) in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD). She taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for fifteen years in MMSD prior to her 4K position. Hayes also taught ESL and five-year-old kindergarten for a total of eight years with the Government of Guam before moving to Wisconsin in 2000. While in Guam, she earned a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the University of Guam in 1995. In 1991, Hayes earned a bachelor of science degree in early childhood education from UW–Stout. She is married and has two adult children. Her husband is from Bali, Indonesia, and she has traveled there many times. She was a scuba diver and an adventurer until she had children and moved back to Wisconsin. Here, she settled in to raise her children with an interest in learning more about the land she grew up on. She loves hiking, photographing things up close, birding, paddling, building fires, reading, seeing live music, foraging for mushrooms, being still in the forest, eating good food, playing euchre, and being with friends.
