Invitational Yearlong Institute

The Greater Madison Writing Project’s (GMWP) Yearlong Institute brings together select groups of outstanding educators working with student-writers in all academic content areas and at all grade levels, kindergarten through college. Supported by GMWP facilitators and each other, these educators spend two weeks during the summer immersed in writing, reading, and researching their own teaching of writing. During the school year the educators will meet monthly to support one another as they implement, evaluate, and revise the instructional changes they researched and developed as part of an action research project during the summer. The Yearlong Institute represents the first leg in what thousands of Writing Project Teacher-Leaders around the country have described as a career-transforming journey.

In assembling a cohort of 10-14 teachers for each GMWP Yearlong Institute, the selection committee will prioritize diversity across grade levels (K-16), content areas, regions (urban, rural, suburban), and school districts. The process is as follows:

Registration for the Yearlong Institute is $1,200, which includes three optional UW-Madison graduate level credits. Participants also have the option of earning an additional three credits at a reduced rate.

If you are an educator from a non-partner district, we would be happy to discuss with your school/district administration why this is a great investment of professional development resources. We can also assist you in finding additional sources of potential funding.

Upon completion of the Yearlong Institute, participants become Greater Madison Writing Project Fellow and are eligible for:

  • On-going support from the GMWP beyond yearlong institute
  • Support to attend and present at regional, state, and national conferences
  • Opportunities to develop and deliver professional development
